Reiki (pronounced ray'-key) is a Japanese word that translates roughly as Universal Life Force Energy. It is the energy that flows through and sustains all living things. The Usui System of Natural Healing, frequently referred to as just "Reiki", is a process that allows the practitioner to direct this energy to aid in the healing of body, mind, and spirit. The energy of a Reiki treatment helps the recipient to achieve harmony and balance on all levels and accelerates the body's natural ability to heal itself. In addition, Reiki opens the mind and spirit, easing the release of pain and disharmony, and thus helping the individual to achieve a greater sense of well being.

What Reiki Can Do for You

Anyone can benefit from a Reiki treatment. It is a gentle, non-invasive technique that involves the laying-on-of-hands. This hands on process allows the healing energy of Reiki to pass through the practitioner into another person. During a formal treatment, the practitioner places his hands on various locations on the recipient's body. These positions correspond to the major organs and bodily systems. Although the energy is directed at specific organs its influence extends to every fiber of the person's being. In addition to the formal positions, Reiki can also be applied to any injured part of the body and even works through casts or bandages.

Since Reiki is an energy working, it is non-intrusive, non-manipulative, and does not include the use of any substances or compounds. The recipient remains fully clothed and comfortable throughout the treatment. A full Reiki treatment typically lasts just over one hour.

Most people who receive a Reiki treatment find it to be a very relaxing and nurturing experience. Many people feel a gentle sense of warmth or a slight tingling sensation. While some have found rapid relief from pain and acute symptoms, other more chronic problems may require a more extensive series of treatments. This varies according to a number of factors including how long the problem or disease has been present, and the amount of energy needed to restore a normal balance to the body. While people have reported remarkable results from Reiki treatments, they should be considered as an addition to, rather than a replacement for traditional medical treatments and therapy.

The Origins of Reiki

Reiki was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian Educator, in the latter part of the Nineteenth Century. It came about as a result of questions raised to him by his university students regarding historical and biblical accounts of healing. Dr. Usui set about an extensive study of the accounts of healing recounted in the writings of many of the world religions. It was through the study of the Buddhist scriptures in their original form that he gained the seeds of his eventual success. Through study, research and meditation he eventually discovered the system that is now known as Reiki. Dr. Usui spent the rest of his days practicing and teaching the techniques of Reiki which involve attunement to the energy and the laying on of hands.

Although Reiki is means of working with the Universal Life Force Energy, it is not a religion and does not require any specific set of religious beliefs. Practitioners come from any of a wide variety of traditional religious backgrounds.
